This page contains genealogical information about our family

Joyce's mother's Troutman ancestry is well documented at the Troutman Historical Association.  Her family is traced back to Jacob Troutman who came to North Carolina from Gros Gumpen, Germany in the mid 1700s.  We visited the small village a few years ago and found many of the same family names that have lived in North Carolina, in the cemetery of the local Lutheran Church.  A big, annual Troutman Reunion is held in Troutman, NC on the second Saturday of each August.  Her Compton relatives have also lived in the Troutman area since the 1700s.

My (Les's) Brown ancestors are of English origin, apparently coming to Pennsylvania, through Orange County, NC and finally settling as farmers of the fertile valley of North Cove North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the 1700s.  My great great grandfather, John Seawell Brown was a prominent settler of McDowell County, serving a term in the NC State Senate.  He purchased the Carson House, the current McDowell County Historical Museum, from Colonel John Carson.  His grandson, Ben Brown, sold the house and moved back to North Cove, where the family first settled. Henry Seawell Brown, my first cousin now owns the Brown family home place in North Cove. He recently held a family celebration of the 200th anniversary of the purchase of the farm (July of 1706)

My grandmother was Aura Belle Westall (Hensley).  She was a direct descendant of William Brittain Westall, the grandfather of Thomas Wolfe, author of Look Homeward Angel.   My great grandfather, Zebulon Vance Westall was a half brother of Thomas Casey Westall, Thomas Wolfe's grandfather.  The Westall ancestry is interesting otherwise in that William Brittain Westall's father, William McGillis Westall (aka Thomas) apparently moved to Texas, purchasing a plantation from Steven Austin, who established the first Anglo American colony in Texas.  Westall was a member of Austin's "Old Three Hundred."  His daughter, Eliza, married the brother of Steven Austin, J.E.B. Austin.
